Frances Hamilton painting in plein air

The Squam Lake Series
These paintings were done on site at a fishing cottage in New Hampshire. I have explored layered memories of summer visits since early childhood. The property has a pristine shoreline and wooden cabin typical of the "Campsteads" that have nestled along the shores of this lake for over 100 years. Bright west light sweeps across the lake and illuminates screened porches, rocking chairs and rustic tables spread with the dishes, books and toys of many generations at rest and play. I try to examine and embrace the passage of time and the preservation of family identity which animates the empty rooms.

Brynmere Series
Painted at a Victorian Inn on Cape Ann. The pine panelled building is a witness to the flow of guests, perennially adaptable and available. The rambling house offers a constant study of bright light and deep shadows. A few photos from the "old days" anchor rooms furnished with a simple sink and towel rack with fans for days when the ocean breeze is not sufficient.

Artist Books
I have made one of a kind painted book-journals for over 30 years. These are a response to the visual pleasures and intimate scale of Indian and Persian Miniatures, Medieval Manuscripts and the memory of favorite childhood stories. These books provided early source material which has been expanded in larger collages on antique papers and book covers. Travel, Food, Fashion, and Dreams are recurrent themes.

Commissions
I have done several mixed media works with children in corporate settings. Telling stories and talking about the experiences of games, families, and animals, children were encouraged to make mixed media representatioins which were translated into collaged mural scale pieces based on the idea of a city.
